WORKED EXAMPLE · FOOD INPUT COSTS

Turn a wheat outlook into a flour sourcing decision.

A public supply forecast starts the review. Your supplier quotes, contracts, production requirements, and inventory determine what it means for your business.

ILLUSTRATIVE FLOUR PURCHASING SCENARIO

6,000 tonnes × $20 per tonne = $120K

Assume 6,000 tonnes of annual flour purchases and a supplier quote that is $20 per tonne above the baseline, applying to the full volume. That produces $120K in added annual purchasing cost. These are example inputs, not a USDA flour-price forecast or a customer result.

01 · Preserve the public source and its scope

USDA’s World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report is published monthly and includes annual forecasts for U.S. and world wheat supply and use. Record the release, relevant table, crop year, geography, and change from the previous report. Treat the report as evidence to investigate. A wheat supply forecast does not establish the delivered flour price in your supplier contract.

02 · Connect the signal to your production needs

Identify the flour specifications used by each production line, approved suppliers, contract renewal dates, remaining committed volumes, and inventory coverage. For a noodle manufacturer, a substitute must meet the product and processing requirements before its price can be compared meaningfully. The output is a clear view of which purchases can change soon, which are already committed, and which lines depend on a limited set of qualified sources.

03 · Use a quote or a stated scenario

Obtain a supplier quote with a defined delivery period and comparable terms, or label the assumed price change explicitly. In the example, $20 per tonne across 6,000 tonnes equals $120K for a full year. If only 2,000 tonnes are exposed during the period being reviewed, the same assumed change produces $40K instead. Keep freight, storage, financing, and other differences visible rather than treating unlike quotes as equivalent.

04 · Compare cost and continuity together

Compare the current source with alternate quotes, contract timing, and a staged purchasing response. Show the cost difference alongside capacity, lead time, specification approval, delivery reliability, and inventory needs. Include the potential benefit of a better source or purchasing window when supported by evidence. A lower quoted price is useful only if the material can reach the line in the required condition and quantity.

05 · Leave the operator with a decision to execute

A practical decision brief names the affected lines and purchase periods, shows the cost range, links the source and quotes, and states what still needs confirmation. A concrete Next Move could be: request comparable delivered quotes for the next purchasing window and complete a specification review before moving volume. Bring procurement, production, and finance into the approval so cost and continuity are assessed together.

How a tailored application could help

An Asbente application can connect external changes to a company’s business context, impact, options, and next decision. For food manufacturers, this illustrative workflow organizes evidence around purchasing and production. Public sources can start the investigation; company records and confirmed terms are needed for a real decision.
